We sat down with Sherri Jost. Sherri is a local writer and the co-author of a new book series to help teens and young adults deal with trauma. Happenings: Tell us a little about your background in the area. Sherri: I am a mother of two daughters. I grew up in South County off of Telegraph Road and went to Oakville Senior High, and I recently moved out to the Wentzville area about six years ago. Happenings: How did the initial idea for writing a book come about? Sherri: When I was getting my Master’s Degree, we were working on some group projects. During the process, I met my friend, Tina Clarin. She and I carried a lot of the work for the group project so we chatted on the phone often. We found out that we had a lot in common; therefore she and I started to collaborate on things and made the decision to write a book one day. Writing a book is always something that I have had in the back of my mind, as well. From there, we came across the idea of a book centered on PTSD and Trauma and Abuse. Happenings: What is the main goal of your book series and who is it aimed at? Sherri: The idea of the books is to be a series centered on topics to help young adults and teens recognize and resolve prior experiences that have caused trauma and abuse. The first book in the series is an introduction to those topics and what those types of discussions look like. The second book is centered on narcissism and the third book is how the school system deals with these topics. The idea is to help children navigate and understand what PTSD and Trauma abuse looks like and how they can best navigate and recognize the many layers within that process. The story is also told through characters portrayed as different animals, such as a mother and two baby owls. Throughout the series, the babies continue to grow from year to year—other animals in the books are not necessarily good and represent negative characteristics that play a part in afflicting trauma and abuse. Happenings: How does your book series provide practical support for those dealing with trauma? Sherri: Depending on everyone’s individual circumstances, the book series can benefit people in different stages of awareness. It can be geared towards Q & A WITH SHERRI JOST Sherri Jost

finding resources for the child or parent dealing with PTSD and trauma issues. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of resources available that pertain to each topic. There are also pages set aside for the reader to be able to journal and collect their own thoughts and notes as they work their way through the book. We also list our contact information for readers to get in touch with us if they have specific questions and need additional access to resources. Happenings: What inspired you to create the organization Stronger Together/New Beginnings and what is its mission? Sherri: I have also started up a new LLC called Stronger Together/New Beginnings. The initial goal of the organization is to save a life. I have been reaching out to area juvenile centers and shelters to help get the word out, along with doing speaking engagements to raise as much awareness as possible and to see where we can find those people that have experienced prior trauma, as the first instinct is to be afraid to speak up. This organization is meant to be a foundation and source for those people to feel safe and navigate how they can move forward successfully. Speaking from personal experience, I was one of those individuals. Someone who had no resources and didn’t even have a phone to be able to make contact. That vulnerability should not be a barrier for folks to have access to the resources they need. We are in touch with many organizations, such as local shelters, churches, compass health and even the fact office—to make sure that we are extending the most comprehensive set of resources to individuals with these experiences and create an overall framework to help save a life. I have also reached out to area schools and organizations to come and speak on these topics. Happenings: Where can readers purchase these books? Sherri: The first book in the series has been published. It is titled: Stronger Together, Walking Through Trauma, PTSD and Abuse. It is currently available for immediate access through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and through links on our website. The best way to get a copy is to google “Stronger Together” and the title and where to purchase will populate. The cover is of the mamma and baby owls that are represented in the medium.

Vibrant Throughout the Festive Season Are you ready to make your home festive and merry this holiday season? Look no further than the stunning and iconic poinsettia plant. Known for its vibrant red leaves and festive charm, the poinsettia is a popular choice for Christmas decorations. But caring for a poinsettia can sometimes be challenging, especially if you're new to plant care. That's why we've created this comprehensive guide to help you keep your poinsettias thriving and vibrant throughout the festive season. This guide will walk you through everything you need about poinsettia care. We cover you, from choosing the perfect plant at the store to providing the right light, water, and temperature conditions. We'll also share expert tips on avoiding common pitfalls and preventing your poinsettia from getting droopy or losing its color too soon. Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or a novice plant lover, this guide will equip you with all the knowledge and tricks you need to keep your poinsettias looking beautiful and blooming all season long. So, let's get started and make your home a holiday marvel with thriving poinsettias. The history of poinsettias With their vibrant red and green foliage, Poinsettias have become synonymous with the Christmas season, but their origins are rooted in Mexican culture. The plant, known as "Nochebuena" in Mexico, translates to "holy night," referring to its association with Christmas Eve. The plant's history is enriched by folklore; one popular story tells of a poor girl who, unable to afford a gift for Jesus, gathered weeds and presented them at a church. Miraculously, the weeds transformed into beautiful red flowers, symbolizing the spirit of giving and love. THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO POINSETTIA CARE GARDEN CLUB TIPS

Page 28

The poinsettia was introduced to the United States in the early 19th century by Joel Poinsett, the first United States Ambassador to Mexico. Fascinated by the plant's beauty, he brought it back to his home in South Carolina and began cultivating it. Poinsett's enthusiasm for the plant led to its widespread popularity, so the flower was named after him. The establishment of National Poinsettia Day on December 12th, the anniversary of Poinsett's death, further solidified its place in American holiday traditions. Today, poinsettias are cultivated in various colors, though the classic red remains the most popular. They have become a staple in holiday decorations, adorning homes, offices, and public spaces. The plant's significance has evolved, representing not only Christmas cheer but also resilience and hope, as it blooms during winter when many other plants go dormant. Understanding the rich history of poinsettias adds a deeper appreciation for these festive plants as they grace our homes during the holiday season. Poinsettia care basics Caring for poinsettias involves understanding their needs to maintain their vibrant appearance throughout the festive season. The first step in successful poinsettia care is to start with a healthy plant. Look for leaves that are rich in color, firm, and free from blemishes or pests. A well-cared-for poinsettia will have a sturdy stem and vibrant bracts, the colorful leaves often mistaken for flowers. Once you’ve selected your plant, providing the right environment is essential. Poinsettias thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. A location near a window that receives filtered light is ideal. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can lead to drooping and loss of color. It’s also crucial to avoid placing poinsettias near drafts, heaters, or air conditioning vents, as they prefer stable temperatures between 65°F and 70°F during the day and slightly cooler at night. Page 29

Watering is another critical aspect of poinsettia care. These plants prefer their soil to dry out slightly between waterings, so checking the moisture level regularly is important. Overwatering can lead to root rot, detrimental to the plant's health. Following these basic care guidelines can significantly increase the chances of your poinsettias thriving and providing a stunning display throughout the holiday season. Choosing the right poinsettia Selecting the right poinsettia ensures a vibrant display throughout the festive season. When shopping for a poinsettia, start by examining the plant closely. Look for a robust stem, which should be upright and free from breaks or blemishes. The leaves, or bracts, should be bright and colorful, preferably without any signs of wilting or yellowing. Additionally, check for a variety with healthy green leaves at the base, indicating that the plant is still growing. Another factor to consider is the size of the plant. Poinsettias come in various sizes, from small tabletop varieties to larger floor plants. Depending on your available space and intended decoration style, choose a size that complements your home without overwhelming the area. More giant poinsettias can serve as stunning focal points, while smaller varieties can be grouped for a charming arrangement. It's also wise to consider the color of the poinsettia. While red is the traditional choice, many other hues are available, including white, pink, and even marbled varieties. Selecting a color that matches your existing decor or brings out the festive spirit can enhance your holiday ambiance. By choosing the right poinsettia, you set the stage for a beautiful and vibrant holiday display. Proper watering techniques for poinsettias Watering is one of the most critical aspects of poinsettia care, and mastering the technique can greatly influence the plant's health and longevity. The key to successful watering is maintaining a balance; poinsettias prefer their soil to remain slightly moist but not soggy. To achieve this, start by checking the soil with your finger. If the top inch feels dry, it’s time to water. When watering, it's essential to do so thoroughly. Pour water slowly until you see it drain from the bottom of the pot. This ensures that the roots are adequately hydrated. However, be cautious not to let the plant sit in standing water, which can lead to root rot. If you notice excess water in the saucer, empty it promptly to prevent the roots from becoming waterlogged. Watering frequency can vary depending on factors such as temperature and humidity. Typically, you may need to water your poinsettia every 5 to 7 days, but it’s crucial to adjust this schedule based on the plant's needs. You may need to water more frequently during warmer days, while cooler temperatures require less. By observing your plant and its environment, you can develop an effective watering routine that keeps your poinsettia healthy and thriving throughout the season. Temperature and lighting requirements for poinsettias Poinsettias are sensitive to environmental conditions, making temperature and lighting critical to their care. Ideally, these plants thrive in temperatures ranging from 65°F to 70°F during the day and slightly cooler at night. Extreme temperature fluctuations can stress the plant, leading to drooping leaves and loss of color. Ensure that your poinsettia is placed away from drafts, heating vents, or air conditioning units to maintain a consistent temperature.

Page 30

Lighting is another essential factor for poinsettia health. These plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight, which helps them maintain their vibrant colors. A location near a window with filtered light is ideal. Direct sunlight hitting the leaves can cause scorching, leading to brown edges and a loss of vitality. Conversely, too little light can result in leggy growth and a decline in bract color. If you notice your poinsettia stretching towards the light, it may be a sign that it needs more exposure. To help your poinsettia thrive, consider rotating the plant every few weeks. This will ensure that all sides receive equal light exposure, promoting balanced growth. If natural light is limited in your home, consider using grow lights to supplement the light conditions. By providing the right temperature and lighting, you’ll create an environment that allows your poinsettia to flourish and remain a stunning centerpiece throughout the holiday season. Preventing and treating common poinsettia problems While poinsettias are generally resilient, they can encounter various issues affecting their appearance and health. One common problem is leaf drop, which can occur due to sudden changes in temperature, overwatering, or underwatering. If you notice leaves falling off, assessing the plant’s environment is crucial. Ensure it’s not exposed to drafts or extreme temperatures, and adjust your watering routine accordingly. Another issue that may arise is the appearance of pests, such as whiteflies or aphids. These pests can be detrimental to your poinsettia, sucking sap from the leaves and weakening the plant. Regularly inspect your plant for any signs of infestation. If you find pests, treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil, which are effective and safe options for most houseplants. Maintaining good air circulation around the plant can also help prevent pest infestations. Fungal diseases can also affect poinsettias, particularly if the plant is overwatered or has poor drainage. Signs of fungal issues include yellowing leaves and a mushy stem. To prevent this, ensure that your pot has drainage holes and you’re not allowing the plant to sit in water. If you do encounter fungal problems, removing the affected parts of the plant and adjusting your care routine can often remedy the situation. Being vigilant and proactive can keep your poinsettias healthy and vibrant throughout the holiday season. Pruning and shaping poinsettias Pruning and shaping your poinsettia can enhance its appearance and health, especially after the holiday season when the plant may begin to decline. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring after the bracts have faded and dropped. At this point, you can cut back the plant to about 6 inches from the soil, which encourages new growth and helps maintain a compact shape. Be sure to use clean, sharp pruning shears to prevent any potential disease transmission.

When pruning, focus on removing any dead or yellowing leaves and any leggy stems that detract from the plant's overall appearance. This process improves the aesthetic and allows the plant to redirect its energy into healthier growth. After pruning, continue providing proper care, including light and watering, to support the plant's recovery and new growth. Shaping your poinsettia can also involve pinching back the tips of the stems during the growing season to encourage bushier foliage. This technique can be used in early summer when the plant is growing actively. Pinching off the tips stimulates lateral growth, resulting in a fuller and more attractive plant. With regular pruning and shaping, you can ensure that your poinsettia remains an eye-catching addition to your holiday decor and beyond. Extending the lifespan of poinsettias To extend the lifespan of your poinsettias and keep them vibrant well beyond the holiday season, it’s essential to understand their natural lifecycle and provide the right conditions. After the festive season, many people discard their poinsettias, assuming they are no longer viable. However, with the right care, these plants can thrive for months, even years. One of the first steps is to continue providing appropriate watering and lighting conditions even after the holidays are over. Once the holiday season has passed and the bracts begin to fade, it’s time to transition your poinsettia to a more suitable environment for growth. Place it in an area with bright, indirect light and continue to water it when the top inch of soil feels dry. You may also want to fertilize the plant every few weeks with a balanced, watersoluble fertilizer to support its recovery and promote healthy growth., low-maintenance paradise. Consider repotting your poinsettia into a slightly larger container with fresh potting soil as spring approaches. This provides the plant with new nutrients and ample space for root growth. Regular pruning and shaping will also help maintain its size and encourage bushier growth. With commitment and care, your poinsettia can become a perennial favorite, providing color and vibrancy to your home long after the holiday season. In conclusion, poinsettias are a beloved symbol of the holiday season, bringing warmth and vibrancy to our homes. By understanding their history and following the proper care techniques outlined in this guide, you can ensure that your poinsettias thrive throughout the festive season and beyond. From choosing the right plant to mastering watering, lighting, and pest prevention, every step you take contributes to these stunning plants' overall health and beauty. happenings. H O M E
